Does Teeth Whitening Hurt?

Almost every teeth whitening product you can find uses the same kind of ingredient called carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. The difference is that companies will offer different strengths of the peroxide, and having too much could cause problems. If you have a tendency to tooth sensitivity, you will want to make sure you stick with 10-15% carbamide peroxide for home teeth whitening procedures. If your teeth are not too sensitive, then you can go with higher percentage.

For in-office teeth whitening, the percentage is higher and that’s why you get instant results. At the same time, your sensitivity will be higher as well. But the good news is that it’s only temporary- usually 24-48 hours.

The biggest problem you will face in the teeth bleaching process is that extra sensitivity to hot and cold liquids. And you might even feel some pain when you breathe in some cold air if you have used too much peroxide. But keep in mind that too much bleaching is not good for your teeth. So it is not a good idea to use whitening gels very often. I normally suggest twice a year is safe.
